Pharmacological Profile
Mechanism of Action:
Diazepam acts as a positive allosteric modulator of the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA-A) receptor. It enhances GABAergic inhibition throughout the CNS, leading to anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, and sedative effects.
Applications in Research:
-
Neuropharmacology studies
-
Seizure models (epileptiform activity)
-
Substance dependence/addiction withdrawal modeling
Because of its relatively long duration of action, and evidence of safety and efficacy, diazepam is preferred over other benzodiazepines for the treatment of persons experiencing moderate to severe alcohol withdrawal.[45] An exception to this is when a medication is required intramuscular in which case either lorazepam or midazolam is recommended.[45]
-
Muscle relaxation and motor control investigations
-
Behavioral and psychological research (e.g., anxiety, fear response)
